Where did the name Luzonica come from?
Luzonica is part of the Latin name for the Luzon Bleeding-Heart Dove. I became fascinated by this dove when I read about it in a field guide to birds from South Asia. Gallicolumba luzonica is the Latin name of the dove and the word "luzonica" sounded beautiful to me. No sooner had I decided to start my own education program, than I knew it would be called Luzonica. For more information about the Luzon Bleeding-Heart Dove, please see our page on doves. After several years of doing educational presentations, Luzonica is proud to have a representative from the species it is named after. Our little Luzon Bleeding-Heart Dove is tame, though timid, and accompanies us to classrooms, where kids and adults can see her striking coloration.
